One of my very favorite things in the whole world is a really good chocolate milkshake. Oh how I love the rich, creamy, cold deliciousness. And oh how I pay when I choose to eat one! Until I found this yummy and healthy solution.

The Price of a Chocolate Milkshake

It had been a long and successful day fishing on the river, and I was hungry. I saw the lights at one of my long-time local favorites, and it seemed the Dairy Keen was calling my name. After all those hours in the sun, surely I deserved a chocolate shake! 

I quickly slurped down every last spoonful without a second thought besides how yummy it was. The next day, however, I didn’t feel so great. My stomach was ‘off.’ I felt bloated and irritable and had some diarrhea. My energy levels were low all day. At the time I was keeping a food/mood/poop journal that my wife, a Certified Functional Nutrition Counselor, was reviewing. “Of course you don’t feel so great,” she said when I whined to her. She pointed to the previous day’s food entry. “Here’s the culprit– you know you pay when you have a milkshake, David!”

She was right. I knew that much sugar and dairy wasn’t good for my gut, but I’d made the choice to eat it anyway. At that moment, I decided that a few minutes of milkshake-induced pleasure are simply not worth the consequences. It’s just not worth feeling like crap for a day or two afterward, not to mention the longer-term damage I was doing to my body.

But before you feel too sorry for me– I have excellent news. I have found a truly satisfying, delicious, and HEALTHY milkshake replacement. Now I can maintain my health and feel good while still having a chocolate shake every day!

A Smoothie a Day Keeps Health Problems at Bay

Imagine eating a delicious milkshake every day! One that not only tastes great, but is also jam-packed with healthy, all-natural ingredients. This shake can replace a meal, and while it only takes a minute or two to prepare, it provides more nutrition than most meals we typically eat. It also can help reduce inflammation in your body (I really notice this when I’m eating a healthy shake regularly) and can help heal leaky gut as you restore your gut microbiome. 

I drink a protein smoothie shake almost every day. My go-to is to mix Eating to Live’s Simply Protein Powder with coconut milk, spinach, strawberries, blueberries, and maca powder. Plus, you don’t even know you’re eating handfuls of healthy greens when you mix them into a yummy and filling shake.

A Chocolate Smoothie Vs. A Chocolate Milkshake

Can you imagine your doctor telling you to eat a chocolate milkshake every day? Well, mine did! A plant-based smoothie version of a milkshake, that is. There are so many benefits to eating organic, plant-based proteins. An easy way to do this is by including a plant-based, organic protein smoothie as part of my regular meal plan. And it’s made a huge difference in my health! 

Let’s have a little fun and compare the nutritional value of my chocolate smoothie to a regular-sized chocolate milkshake:

Nutritional value for a regular-size chocolate banana milkshake:

Calories: 940

Fat: 28 grams

Carbs: 155 grams

Sugars: 115 grams

Protein: 16 grams

(That’s a lot of calories! Did you know it would take over 4 hours of fast walking to burn off 940 calories? Not to mention all those carbs and unhealthy sugars!)

My chocolate banana protein smoothie (with a handful of spinach thrown in):

Calories: 268.5

Fat: 10.5 grams

Carbs: 28 grams

Sugars: 7 grams

Protein: 25

Yeah…I’ll take the smoothie, thanks. Besides being able to compare those numbers and logically know what makes sense for my health, I know HOW I FEEL after I eat each of these shakes. And the difference is enormous. 

This is an example of a simple change that has helped me to truly reclaim my health. A shake a day means my body is getting high-quality, all-natural ingredients like organic pea protein isolate, goji berry, and MCT oil. And, because they’re also dairy-, gluten-, and sugar-free, these ingredients work to strengthen and heal my gut. And somehow, they still taste great!

That day at the Dairy Keen was the very last ice cream milkshake I’ve ever had, but it doesn’t feel like a sacrifice. I now know better. My daily shake is an easy way to continue ‘eating to live’ so that I can feel my very best every day. It couldn’t be more worth it.
